Bich Cau Temple

Bich Cau Temple is a historical religious site in Vietnam, located at 14 Cat Linh Street, Dong Da District, Hanoi. The temple worships Tran Tu Uyen, a historical figure who contributed during the resistance against the Ming invasion and in healing the sick. Bich Cau Temple is also known as Bich Cau Dao Quan or Tu Uyen Temple.

Bich Cau Temple

The temple was built in the study room of Tran Tu Uyen in the late 15th century, at the beginning of the 16th century, during the reign of King Le Thanh Ton. Legend has it that Tran Tu Uyen, since childhood, led an ascetic life but was very eager to learn. Orphaned at an early age, he often went to Kim Quy Hill (Bich Cau Temple) to set up a makeshift hut for studying medicine to help people. He provided medical treatment to many poor locals, earning their admiration.

During the Ming invasion, when the country was under threat, he cured the illness of General Tra Toan, who, grateful for his kindness, withdrew the invading troops, bringing peace to the nation. In recognition of his contributions, King Le Thanh Ton bestowed the title "An Quoc chan nhan" (National Benevolent Person) upon Tran Tu Uyen. After achieving enlightenment, he met the fairy Giang Kieu and together ascended to the heavens.

To commemorate the merits of the immortal Tran Tu Uyen, seven family lines in An Trach village, Vinh Thuan district (now part of Quoc Tu Giam ward), constructed the Bich Cau Dao Quan relic complex for worship. Annually, local residents organize festivals on the 2nd and 3rd lunar months, celebrating the day of Tran Tu Uyen's enlightenment, the day he ascended to heaven, and his birthday on the 8th lunar month, which is also the main festival day for the temple.

During the main festival day, various rituals are performed, including chanting Buddhist scriptures and praying to the temple's deities. Following this, the elders in the Nam An Trach – Bich Cau procession wear green traditional garments, scholar hats, and blue sandals, performing ritual ceremonies. The cultural program includes ca tru singing and reenactments of Tran Tu Uyen's studies, medicinal practices, and encounters with the fairy.

The Bich Cau Temple festival strongly reflects the Daoist culture of Vietnam, preserving traditions in an ancient style. It is not only an occasion to honor Tran Tu Uyen but also an opportunity for cultural exchange, maintaining the traditional values of the nation. Visiting here, you can admire ancient architectural structures, learn about significant historical events, and feel the humanitarian and heroic spirit of Tran Tu Uyen. Bich Cau Temple truly deserves to be a symbol of the history and culture of this region."
