Canh Tien Tower in Binh Dinh Province
Constructed in the late 13th century during the reign of King Nguyen Hoang, the tower reflects the frequent cultural exchange between the Khmer and Champa kingdoms. Canh Tien Tower is dedicated to the worship of the Goddess Ya Na, an important deity in Cham culture, believed to have control over nature, reproduction, and health. Additionally, the tower is associated with a folk tale about the love between a Cham boy and a Vietnamese girl.
According to the folk story, a Cham boy named Ham Nghi, known for his intelligence and talents, was summoned by King Nguyen Hoang to serve as an official in Hue. During one of his trips to Binh Dinh, he met and fell in love with a Vietnamese girl named Ngoc Lan. The two got married and lived happily near Canh Tien Tower. However, due to the jealousy of another official, Ham Nghi was falsely accused and expelled back to Champa. Unable to bear the pain of losing her husband, Ngoc Lan committed suicide by jumping from the tower. Later, Ham Nghi returned to Binh Dinh and discovered the truth. Overwhelmed with grief, he also jumped from the tower to be with his wife. Since then, Canh Tien Tower has been considered a symbol of undying and loyal love.
