Canh Tien Tower in Binh Dinh Province


Canh Tien Tower is an ancient tower located in Nhon Hung commune, An Nhon district, Binh Dinh province. The tower was built in the 12th century, featuring the Binh Dinh architectural style with some influence from the Angkor Wat architecture of the Khmer people. Canh Tien Tower is an architectural structure with religious, historical, and cultural significance, serving as a tourist attraction for both local and international visitors. Situated atop a hill approximately 20 meters high, Canh Tien Tower offers a beautiful view overlooking the valley. The tower, made of bricks with a square-shaped base, stands nearly 20 meters tall. Its exterior is adorned with decorative columns, vertical frames, fake doors, corner decorative towers, and stone petals resembling fairy wings.  Canh Tien Tower in Binh Dinh Province

Constructed in the late 13th century during the reign of King Nguyen Hoang, the tower reflects the frequent cultural exchange between the Khmer and Champa kingdoms. Canh Tien Tower is dedicated to the worship of the Goddess Ya Na, an important deity in Cham culture, believed to have control over nature, reproduction, and health. Additionally, the tower is associated with a folk tale about the love between a Cham boy and a Vietnamese girl.


According to the folk story, a Cham boy named Ham Nghi, known for his intelligence and talents, was summoned by King Nguyen Hoang to serve as an official in Hue. During one of his trips to Binh Dinh, he met and fell in love with a Vietnamese girl named Ngoc Lan. The two got married and lived happily near Canh Tien Tower. However, due to the jealousy of another official, Ham Nghi was falsely accused and expelled back to Champa. Unable to bear the pain of losing her husband, Ngoc Lan committed suicide by jumping from the tower. Later, Ham Nghi returned to Binh Dinh and discovered the truth. Overwhelmed with grief, he also jumped from the tower to be with his wife. Since then, Canh Tien Tower has been considered a symbol of undying and loyal love.


Canh Tien Tower is a historical and tourist site, and there is no entrance fee. Visitors are free to explore and admire the unique architecture of the tower without any admission cost.
