According to historical documents, Dam Ao Chau was discovered in the late 19th century by French explorers. They recorded the breathtaking natural landscapes of this place and named it "La Baie d’Along" (Halong Bay). Subsequently, in the 1930s-1940s, the area was developed into an eco-tourism zone by French entrepreneurs.


After liberation, Dam Ao Chau received attention and investment for development from the local authorities. In 1996, this tourism area was recognized as a historical-cultural site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
