Festival in the Ancient Capital of Hoa Lu
Every year, in the third lunar month, a traditional festival is held in Hoa Lu to commemorate and honor the kings and national heroes who contributed to the construction and defense of the ancient capital. This festival is known as the Hoa Lu Festival (or Truong Yen Festival, or Co Lau Festival). It is one of the oldest historical festivals in Vietnam, currently recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, and is proposed to be organized as a state-level ceremonial event.
The Hoa Lu Festival comprises two parts: the ceremony and the fair. The ceremony takes place at historical and religious sites such as Dinh Tien Hoang Temple, Le Dai Hanh Temple, Bai Dinh Pagoda, etc. The ritual includes various ceremonies such as opening the temple gates, water procession, wood-carrying ceremony, fire procession, and main worship ceremony. These ceremonies follow the traditions of ancient feudal dynasties, symbolizing gratitude and praise for the contributions of kings and national heroes.
The fair is organized in the square of Hoa Lu Ancient Capital and the surrounding areas. The fair features folk art activities and traditional sports competitions, including the festival opening, flag exercises, Thai Binh word arrangement, tug of war, crossbow shooting, boat racing, wrestling, chess competition, ca tru performance, rowing, Van singing, lion dancing, and more. The fair reflects the excitement and enthusiasm of the people, showcasing the strength and talent of various villages.
The Hoa Lu Festival is a cultural event with unique characteristics and a strong Vietnamese ethnic identity. It is not only an occasion for people to express their gratitude to their ancestors but also an opportunity for cultural exchange, learning, and entertainment. The festival is a major attraction for both local and international tourists visiting Ninh Binh. Come to the Hoa Lu Festival to experience the historical and cultural values of the ancient capital, as well as the richness and diversity of Vietnamese cuisine and folk art.
