The Dich Long Pagoda Festival in Ninh Binh Province


Dich Long Pagoda is an ancient and sacred pagoda located in Gia Thanh commune, Gia Vien district, Ninh Binh province. Built in the 14th century, the pagoda venerates eight kings of the Tran Dynasty, including the heroic national figure, General Tran Quoc Tuan, who played a significant role in the resistance against the Mongol invaders. Dich Long Pagoda stands as a significant monument representing the Tran Dynasty's historical relics in Ninh Binh, where rituals and ceremonies are conducted to honor the ancestors. The pagoda was recognized as a Special National Monument in 2012.

The Dich Long Pagoda Festival is held on the 6th and 7th days of the 3rd lunar month each year, commemorating the death anniversary of General Tran Quoc Tuan. The festival consists of two parts: the ceremony and the fair. The ceremony takes place at the Dich Long Pagoda heritage site and includes rituals such as drum beating, gong opening ceremony, incense offerings to commemorate the Tran kings and General Tran Quoc Tuan, praying for national prosperity, and presenting incense at the royal tombs. The ceremony follows the traditional customs of the Vietnamese people, expressing gratitude and praise for the contributions of the Tran kings and their predecessors in building and protecting the country.


The fair is organized at the village square or playground and features folk art performances and traditional sports competitions such as lion and dragon dances, Chinese chess, calligraphy competitions, traditional games, and more. Additionally, there are activities like exhibitions of Ninh Binh's photos and artistic Bonsai displays. The fair showcases the excitement and enthusiasm of the people, highlighting the strength and talent of the local communities.
