The historical site of the Steel Pillar in An Giang

Designed by Prince Souphanouvong, the former President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, who served as the Chief Architect of the Public Administration Zone in Nha Trang, the 30-meter-tall Steel Pillar has a sharp pyramid shape. It is constructed from four steel columns connected by crisscrossed steel bars. At the top of the pillar, the inscription "U.E.PT" (short for "Usine Des Eaux de Phan Thiet") is crafted with ancient-style ceramic pieces, forming circular writing. These letters act as a historical record of the origin of the structure.

The contractor responsible for the construction was Ung Du, originally from Hue, working in Binh Thuan. Due to economic hardships and the war, the project extended from 1928 to 1934 before completion. Subsequently, it was put into operation, providing water to the entire urban area of Phan Thiet.

In late March 1930, the Hau Giang Special Commissioner established the Long Dien Party cell. To celebrate this event, the first Party flag was hoisted atop the Steel Pillar, marking an important milestone that both inspired the people and intimidated the enemy. The Steel Pillar became the first location in the An Giang province where the Party flag was hung, becoming a focal point for mass protests and struggles for national freedom.

In 1990, the Steel Pillar was recognized as a national-level historical site. Today, visitors who have the opportunity to visit An Giang and stop by the Steel Pillar historical site will deeply appreciate the significance it holds. It is not only a sightseeing spot to recall various events in history, but it also instills a sense of pride in visitors, standing beneath the majestic steel pillar that once held the first Party flag.
