Thon Van Cave in Kien Giang Province


Thon Van Cave is a famous scenic spot in Kien Giang Province, located in My Duc commune, Ha Tien town. It is a limestone mountain block about 90m high, resembling a standing tower in the middle of the fields. Thon Van Cave is also known as the Cloud-Swallowing Cave because, in the early morning, white clouds fly over the mountain top and are held back in front of the cave, gradually drifting inside as if the cave is swallowing the clouds.

Thon Van Cave not only possesses majestic and surreal natural beauty but also holds many fascinating myths and legends that have been passed down for a long time. It is considered the birthplace of the fairy tale of Thach Sanh - Ly Thong, telling the story of Thach Sanh, who entered the cave to kill a giant eagle to save Princess Quynh Nga. Additionally, inside the cave, there are many peculiar-shaped stalactites and stalagmites, such as dragon, turtle, elephant shapes, etc. Some believe that these formations were created by deities to protect the cave.


To enter the cave, visitors have to climb about 50 stone steps from the mountain base. At the cave entrance, tourists can admire the panoramic view of Ha Tien town and the Cambodia border. Inside the cave, there is a spacious and cool space with natural light shining through cracks in the ceiling. The cave also houses Tien Son Pagoda, built in 1790, dedicated to Buddha Shakyamuni and Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. The pagoda features ancient and majestic architecture, serving as a place of worship for the local people.

To reach Thon Van Cave, visitors can travel from Rach Gia City by motorbike or car along National Highway 80. The distance from Rach Gia to Thon Van Cave is about 60 km, taking approximately 1 hour by car. If coming from Ha Tien, tourists only need to travel about 3.5 km along the same highway. Thon Van Cave is listed among the top 10 beautiful landscapes in Ha Tien, making it easy to find with directional signs.


The best time to visit Thon Van Cave is during the dry season, from November to May. During this period, the weather is dry, mildly sunny, and without storms, providing visitors with a comfortable experience for exploration and photography. If visiting during the rainy season, tourists should pay attention to the weather conditions and prepare rain gear accordingly.
